SEO Frequently Asked Questions

QUESTION: Posted on 5/9/2005 11:13:36 PM
should I submit all the pages on my site to the search engines?

ANSWER: Posted on 5/19/2005

There are varying viewpoints on this matter.  Some believe that submitting all pages can facilitate inclusion into the indexes.  However, depending on how many pages and how often you submit, this could be seen as spam and may jeopardize your indexing.  Plus, there is no guarantee that the search engines will include any or all submitted pages.

Others argue that there is no need to submit any pages at all.  As long as you have a link pointing to your site from a page they already know about, then the search engine spiders will find the rest of the pages on their own.  That being said, not all search engines are created equal.  Some engines are efficient at finding new pages.  Others, however, are considerably slower.

Most search engines indicate that it is only necessary to submit the top-level page of a site, because their crawlers will find the rest.  This method bridges the gap between submitting all pages and not submitting any.  By submitting only your top-level page (and perhaps one or two other key site pages) you not only avoid spamming, but also help to minimize the effects of less efficient web crawlers.
