The 301 redirect was designed to tell the search engines that the URL or even domain has changed and transfer any credits built up in the old page to the new page.d The transfer does take time to propogate but it's the most effect method to transfer rankings. We do however sometime see the ranking drop out for a short time and then return in a few weeks. It works best if the 301 transfers pages directly ie (www.yourdoamin.com/oldpage.asp 301 directs to www.yourdomain.com/newpage.asp) this works the best. To transfer a lot of pages you need to use 301 redirect conditions and rules to handle all the pages for you. You can easily do the same from one domain to another if the page names remain the same so it just replaces the old domain for the new one. The SE will also start to transfer credit from one domain to the new domain. Chris |
