AdSense – Google AdSense is an easy way for large and small website publishers to display relevant on their website and to earn money.  It is also a way for website publishers to provide Google web and site search to their visitors, thereby making money by displaying Google ads on the search results pages.

Adwords – Google's CPC (Cost Per Click) based text advertising. AdWords takes clickthrough rate into consideration as well as a bid to determine the ads position within sponsored search results. Google uses such factors in order to promote those paid search results that are more popular and thus presumably more relevant and useful. Google now also takes into account a quality score assigned to the quality of the landing page.  AdWords can be found at: http://adwords.google.com

Agent Name – This is the name of the Crawler/spider that is currently visiting a page.

Algorithm – A set of criteria or methods used by a search engine or directory to rank pages according to what they perceive as the most relevant to a given query. There may be as many as 100 different criteria used including keyword density, placement, use of Meta tags, use of themes, etc. Each search engine or directory uses their own set of criteria or search engine algorithm, which they change often in an effort to improve how well pages match a search query.

Alt Tag – "alt" isn't actually a tag by itself but an attribute to the "img" tag. An alt tag is the alternate text associated with a web page graphic. Alt tags should convey what the graphic is for or about, containing good relevant keywords. Alt tags also make web pages more accessible to the disabled. For example, a vision-impaired user may have a web browser that reads aloud the text and alt tags on a page. "alt" isn't actually a tag by itself but an attribute to the "img" tag.

Anchor Text – A textual word or phrase (usually underlined) that is displayed instead of the actual link to a URL or email. Search engines use this as a factor in determining rank. Google in particular pays attention to the text used in a hyperlink and associates the keywords contained in the anchor text to the page being linked to.

ASP – An acronym for Active Server Pages, a proprietary programming language for building dynamic web sites that was invented by Microsoft. It is also an acronym for Application Service Provider which is a hosted service available via the Internet.

Automated Submitting – Describes the use of automated software to submit your web pages to the search engines. Search engines do not approve of automated submission, in fact, some search engines require the user to manually re-key in a one-time use submission code displayed on the submission page as a graphic.
